Erik Buell Racing back in business; production slated to start in March t’s been one sequence of corporate upheaval after another in recent years for respected chassis and performance engineer Erik Buell. However, whisper it softly, but it may be that his latest cycle of "difficulties" may after all be about to take a turn for the better - for the time being at least. After running out of money a year ago, a tortuous on-off process of asset auctions made it unclear (unlikely even) that his EBR business would ever survive an administration process that quickly became liquidation. EBR is the business that Buell phoenixed from the ashes of Harley's 2009 decision to close Buell Motorcycles, as it reacted drastically to the downturn under the leadership of CEO Keith Wandell. Buell had started the business in 1983; Harley took a 49 percent position in it in 1993, and then took over full ownership 10 years later. Initially EBR was a race bike business, focused on the 1190RS it launched in 2011. In 2013 EBR sold a 49.2 percent stake to ambitious Indian

I

motorcycle manufacturer Hero Motor Corp as it looked for a northern hemisphere foothold that could be a springboard for entry into the higher value and larger displacement North American and European markets. Initially that deal looked robust as Hero established a race team, and a

European EBR subsidiary was set up with sales underway of its 1190RX production street bike derivative, and the 2013 announcement of plans for an 1190SX streetfighter styled "muscle bike". Indeed there were plans for an adventure bike too, believed to have been designated 1190AX, and work was well underway helping Hero to develop new models, the HX250R among them. Hero is the world's largest

single entity motorcycle manufacturer, by unit volume, but efforts to leverage its "strategic alliance" with, and investment in, East Troy, Wisconsin based EBR always looked ambitious, especially in relation to the price it paid for its stake. That stake was a $25m investment, and it clearly proved inadequate as EBR collapsed with debts put at around $20m when it filed for protection in 2015, leaving some 126 employees with uncertain futures. There still are rumors and uncertainties about the exact role that Hero played (or more to the point did not play) in securing EBR's position. That uncertainty was only worsened by a liquidation process that saw Hero successfully bid for some assets it claimed as its own, and two failed attempts by at least two other bidders to secure the remaining tooling and parts - one of those bidders had been Belfer, of Atlantic Metals Group in New Jersey, who was also hoping to secure a future for EBR as a viable manufacturer. However, Bill Melvin's Grand Rapids, Michigan based Liquid Asset Partners Continued on page 6 >>>

Low hanging fruit is high 'Octane' stuff s anticipated, the new Victory Octane dares to go where Harley has feared, or failed to tread. Clearly aimed at the contemporary taste for post-streetfighter street-performers, it marks yet another bold initiative in what is increasingly looking like a slam-dunk for Polaris. With Indian competing (convincingly) headon with Harley's core legacy cruisers, then picking off what looks like a major business opportunity with the Victory 'Octane', and thereby making one of Harley's pathways way more difficult than it would have been if Milwaukee had struck first or managed to better evolve their initial V-Rod offerings by now. The Scout is likely to compete hard against the Sportster, and the Springfield will offer yet another option against Harley's core Big Twin market. The news that an, albeit at this stage race-only, 750cc twin, set for flat-track, is proving to make it even more imperative that the much vaunted new models that Harley is expected to unveil this year had better be about platform and not just capacity. Strategically 'Octane' is not rocket science. The niche it is likely to now define has been pretty apparent as a yawning chasm of opportunity for some years. With other 'low hanging fruit' just waiting to be picked-off (adventure Tourers and urban Enduro in particular), it is stating the blindingly obvious, but the motorcycle market has emerged from the downturn much changed. Our demographic is increasingly more broad based in terms of its riding and ownership tastes and expectations, and increasingly less tainted by the tribalism of the past, less weighed down by motorcycle culture baggage and a lot more inclined to want their choices to offer stretch and challenge rather than conservative reinforcement of preconceptions and stereotypes. From a custom parts and accessory industry perspective, all this is undiluted good news. The platform of choice no longer needs to be limited to someone else's take on 'cool' and, at last, well gone are the days when "custom" had itself fallen under the spell of "cookie cutter". The irony of the mainstream of the custom market as seen at the majority of shows and in the majority of magazines between the late '90s and around '09, especially in the United States, is that custom had become conservative. It had descended from an expression of individuality into class structures that forced custom motorcycle design and engineering back into the box it was supposed to break free from - righteous disdain rather than "nice idea, way-to-go" had become the response to anything adventurous. The so-called 'keepers-of-the-flame' purists, uncritically greeted innovation with indignation, censure and downright hostility yet those perpetrating the fraud just couldn't see the paradox. When the events program that eventually became the AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building first appeared on the scene, we attracted no end of criticism from those who "liked it the way it was" and who championed a status quo that would see it forever remain thus if they had it their way. We were always all for the market's heritage being preserved and celebrated, but someone needed to showcase the also much needed unrestrained way forward that would be needed for the industry to be able to reach future generations of riders.

A

Fast forward 10-15 years, and much of what we were doing has itself morphed from radical to mainstream (mission accomplished!), and as a whole new generation of builders and shows take that forward further still, "the child truly has now eaten the parent" (to resurrect a much used phrase from this column in years past). Now the mainstream OEs are falling over themselves to offer platforms that kick sand in the face of conventional productionization to instead embrace platforms that are canvases for personalization - a concept that was once their enemy is now their friend. The Victory 'Octane' is self-evidently a major opportunity for the aftermarket. As you'll see in next month's AMD Magazine edition, the likes of Yamaha with their 'Yard Built' program, and Ducati with the their 'Custom Rumble' competition, are aggressively targeting the riders that might otherwise have felt no option but to be drawn to conventional air-cooled 45-degree V-twins to get their self-expression kicks. Above all though, they are targeting those who would never have realized that you didn't need to be a so-called "Master Builder" in order to be able to go to the party. Please sir, can we have those consumers as our customers too? In the early 1990s, especially in Europe, that "conventional" custom platform attracted many from the 'metric' and especially from the then burgeoning 'streetfighter' style market away from the yards of plumbing and acres of plastic that characterized the wrap for Japanese power plants - precisely because of the versatility that the V-twin offered as an "engineer's canvas". Some 25 years later, and what goes round has spun again. The 'retro-vibe', the garage-build, and the scramble for Scramblers and new beard styles are in the vanguard as a market that was once niche has itself become the primary driver of overall international motorcycle industry growth - certainly in the northern hemisphere. The news that Erik Buell may again be back in business is, of course, welcome, but it is a very smart move to make the first model to come out of the re-financed factory - the 1190 SX - the 'streetfighter' styled 1190 variant that EBR had just started building when it all went smelly for them a year ago. With BMW using their R nineT as their weapon of choice, and the slew of new-for2016 Triumphs about to be augmented by a production 'Bobber', Indian and Victory are only the tip of the iceberg of competitive pressure that now haunts HarleyDavidson. Meanwhile, over in the lil' ol' aftermarket - bring it on I say! The more OE capital that is being sunk into the message of individuality the better it is for custom parts makers, designers and retailers of all kinds. The more that consumers are encouraged to think of life beyond the crate, the better. Another few more years of this, and even though the metal may be a different shape and carry a different badge, perhaps finally we'll be back where it all started.

<<< Continued from cover (LAP) emerged successful in January at the third time of asking. No stranger to motorcycle and powersports industry liquidations, from the outset Melvin has made it clear that he wanted to try to secure a future for EBR as a going concern, returning it to production before it could be sold-on as a viable business to owners that would develop it as an American motorcycle manufacturer. LAP has been one of the 'go-to' liquidation specialists in the motorcycle and powersports industry. Their prior industry involvements have been many and varied. LAP was the company that Harley-Davidson used to sell off the assets of Buell Motorcycles in the first place in 2010, and have previously been involved in several other powersports industry asset disposals - such as "Gilroy" Indian, American Ironhorse and Cannondale. Indeed, LAP is currently conducting the sale of the remaining parts stock of Columbus, Ohio based Dixie Distributing. At the time of writing LAP was slating March 17th as the day for production to recommence, and inviting the

media to go to the factory to witness the latest twist in the Buell story. The new company, EBR Motorcycles, LLC, will start with production of 2016 1190RX and 1190SX motorcycles. The first bikes are scheduled to roll off the line on March 17th with a Press Day for approved media, with March 18th slated as a day for "the public, Buell Nation, and EBR fans to attend the EBR launch party at the factory." Bill Melvin Jr., who will be CFO of the new business, is quoted as saying that "this would not be possible without the EBR team. All the credit goes to them for waiting out the storms during the last year. Now the clouds have cleared, EBR is able to shift into gear knowing that it has financial stability, a profitable multi-year plan, and a 5-10 year vision. We feel there is still room for new partnerships or investment, but it is not critical. EBR is on solid ground and moving forward." Erik Buell, who will serve as Chief Technical Officer, said: "I am really looking forward to the launch and the press day. I have dedicated my life to this and want to get the word out on how great our motorcycles are."

Avon Cobra for Trike front ends Avon Tyres has announced a 16" Cobra tire specifically designed for trike front wheel applications. Features include a flatter profile to resist the scrubbing-off effect that trike fronts are typically prone to, and with bigger blocks of rubber in the construction to resist the irregular wear that can occur. The sidewall has "Trike" emblazoned on it to differentiate it from regular Cobra motorcycle tires and the special construction is said to help with heavy loads. Last year the British custom tire specialist moved to add to its durability credentials with the announcement of an innovative

road hazard warranty program that offers a free replacement of any new tire if it suffers accidental, puncture or impact damage soon after purchase. Avon followed that up with a 15,000 mile limited treadwear warranty for its Cobra and Storm 3D X-M tires. If the tread wears to the treadwear indicators within the first 15,000 miles of normal use, the company will award a credit adjustment in the form of a prepaid card for the unused mileage. Available on tires purchased in the U.S. and Canada, the warranty covers the tire for a maximum of two years from the date of purchase. www.avonmotorcycle.com

Havoc Motorcycles and Wild West Motor Company announce partnership Having acquired Apollo Choppers two years ago, Wild West Motor Company CEO Jim Winn has struck a comarketing and joint distribution partnership with Havoc Motorcycles of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. The objective of the alliance is to "extend the reach of both brands across North America. The vision of both companies is the same," said Winn of the Buckner, Kentucky based company. "We both build extremely powerful exotic motorcycles by hand with the highest quality components, with no compromise in style, beauty or attention to detail. It's about working

together to bring our passion for building them to riders whose passion is riding them." "The models are complementary," said Dr Jarrod Wiener, President of Havoc Motorcycles. "Wild West manufactures the "Gunfire," an exotic pro-street based on a drag bike frame, and the "Dragoon" chopper-style motorcycle. Havoc's models are custom baggers. By working together we can offer dealerships a variety of

styles under the same assurance of quality." Havoc's models include three stretched baggers - the "Wildcat," "Slayer," and the flagship "Iron Flight: Mike Tyson Special Edition," built

under license from the iconic boxer and entertainer. Under the agreement, the Wild West models will be added to the Havoc catalog, and the Havoc models will be added to the Wild West line-up for comarketing and shared distribution. "We're bringing independent motorcycle dealers an expanded range, a simple ordering process and streamlined logistics under a single commitment to excellence," said Winn. Additionally, Winn says that after many requests they are also intending to sell into Europe. www.havoc-motorcycles.com www.wildwestmc.com

Jesse Rooke parts designs now BRIEFS available through HardDrive

NEWS Reuters reports that a recent study into road traffic accidents in Michigan, USA, shows that deaths and head injuries among motorcyclists "rose sharply" in the three years after the state repealed its mandatory helmet law. Published in the American Journal of Surgery, the report says that deaths at the scene of an accident have more than quadrupled, while deaths in the hospital tripled, with head injuries increasing overall and more of them being severe. This year's annual Drag Specialties Ride is scheduled for November 4 – 7, 2016 in Jekyll Island, GA, at the Westin Jekyll Island Hotel. The process of industry consolidation continues - the owner of Cycle Gear, the California headquartered 100 plus retail store chain, has bought RevZilla, a Philadelphia based online motorcycle apparel retailer founded in 2007. Cycle Gear itself was the subject of acquisition in January 2015 when it was sold to private equity firm JW Childs by then owner Harvest partners. Boston based JW Childs has established a new holding company for the two businesses estimated to have combined sales in the region of $400m a year.

The latest news at the V-Twin Expo was of an industry debut for the new parts and accessory design partnership announced by the HardDrive V-twin products division of Boise, Idaho based WPS (Western Power Sports) with respected customizer Jesse Rooke. The alliance that will see the bike builder serve as HardDrive’s creative

ambassador for the foreseeable future - the company said that "Rooke brings years of custom bike building experience and his own unique style to HardDrive as he sets to work designing signature V-twin parts for the brand." As part of the agreement HardDrive will also now serve as the official distributor of Rooke Customs

products. Ahead of what became a custom trend when he burst onto the custom bike scene with his first bike Dinah in 2002, "Jesse established himself as a creative thinker who didn’t feel constrained by the way it had 'always been done' previously. "Jesse Rooke's unique design style is a direct result of his long history in motorsports: his involvement in AMA road racing, motocross, auto racing and shifter karting all played a role in creating a style which blends form, function, simplicity and performance into machines that perform as well as they look. The lines are smooth and classic, seamlessly blending one curve into the next; the designs are deceptively simple with no extraneous additions that add weight and detract from performance." www.wps-inc.com

<<< Continued from back page products, is an opportunity for brand profile development - in stark contrast to Harley's always inappropriately short-sighted and insular track record in such matters. The whole point about the concept teaser campaign, about working with the likes of Urs Erbacher and Zach Ness, was to demonstrate the versatility of what was about to be unveiled, and that the company understands that it doesn't hold a monopoly on design and engineering intelligence, creativity and experience. This is clearly a platform that is going to exploit the market opportunity that Harley-Davidson singularly failed to make their own with the V-Rod, and one that will no doubt spawn variants a-plenty in the coming months and years. Convincing as a stock showroom floor offer it no doubt will be, in sales terms, this first production model is clearly designed to pull a double shift - create sales, yes, but also to create a volume niche (if that's not too much of an oxymoron) that mainlines straight into one of the riding experience spaces where the mind-set of mainstream consumer thinking is headed. The stock bore, stroke and compression ratio of 'Octane' look like they offer plenty of scope for seeing the stock 104 bhp and 76 ft.lbs torque being taken up a few notches, and the near optimum 60 degree v-twin layout provides the space (and, presumably, the metal) to play with. The chassis configuration is certainly going to be capable of taking more power as the use of the solid mounted powertrain as a stressed member to tie together the cast-aluminum semidouble-cradle tubular-steel backbones frame has "robust" stamped all over it just as assuredly as the fuel-injected, liquid-cooled DOHV 4-valve per cylinder wet clutch 6-speed configuration screams "tune me". At under 600 lbs, this first foray into proper temperature control and 21st century engine and gearbox technology can hardly be expected to be Polaris' last. The much speculated upon new liquid-

10

cooled engine that Harley may (or still may yet not) be about to give some kind of debut to later this year has probably already been ambushed. If it turns out that, initially, it is only a solution to better pushing their tourers along in straight lines, then fair enough, that isn't what this new Victory engine is about. But if Milwaukee harbors fantasies that it could be the start of something more strategic, then it may turn out to be too little too late. The pavements of the motorcycle industry are littered with missed opportunities - having had multiple opportunities to be way ahead of the curve (Eric Buell, MV Agusta, Project Nova/Overlord etc), are Harley now likely to be permanently consigned to playing catch-up where "American Muscle" is concerned?

NEWS

BRIEFS The organizers of Moto Bike Expo at Verona, Italy, are claiming a 150,000 attendance for the January 2016 show. The AMA has approved two Indian engines for Flat Track racing - a race-only Indian 750 twin, and the 1,000 cc 60 incher Indian Scout 60 engine. Now under MIC ownership, AIMExpo has announced that as at February 11 it already had over 200 exhibitors signed up for this year's 4th annual show slated for Orlando from October 13-16. This year will see the show move to the new North hall of Orlando's Orange County Convention Center, bringing the indoor exhibit space closer to the outdoor action and feature zones. The show claims to have had 566 exhibitors, 888,000 total sq ft of exhibit space and combined dealer, media and consumer attendance of 19,000 in 2015. The storied history of the Bell Helmet brand has taken another turn with Bushnell Golf and CamelBak owner Vista Outdoor adding Bell Sports Corp to its portfolio. The deal is potentially worth some $400m to seller BRG Sports, but does include an earn-out element relating to powersports industry performance - reflecting the Bell brand's continued struggle for air.

MAG Connection adds TBR The Californian made Two Brothers Racing product line is now available for dealers in Europe through France based purchasing portal provider and distribution, buying consortium and representation specialist MAG Connection. Well known for their exhausts, TBR's patent-pending bolt-on Comp-V high-flow intake system with 2-into1 'V-Stack' gives riders the option to quick-change the threaded V-Stack for a direct air intake or threaded

billet cap to bring in air through the high-flow air filter. Said to offer significant performance gains over the stock H-D teardrop air cleaner cover, the CNC-machined aluminum construction features a tapered design for additional knee clearance, an internal breather to eliminate oil leakage and threaded end cap to utilize a K&N high-flow filter. www.mag-connection.com www.twobros.com

Twin Power rides again After a 34-year absence, there is a new Twin Power catalog available for dealers. It is published by Tucker Rocky/Biker's Choice, owners of the Twin Power brand since they acquired the precursor of Biker's Choice, the New England Motor Parts Company (NEMPCO), in 1992. It features a wide range of aftermarket parts and accessories for the American V-twin market. NEMPCO was founded in 1971 by Larry Coppola; the Twin Power line was first introduced to the powersports industry by them in 1982 when the program

was headed up for NEMPCO by Jim Thompson, Charlie Hadayia, Sr. and others – and after having spent some years at S&S Cycle, these days Charlie Hadayia Jr is actually a Senior Segments Director at Tucker Rocky - proof that once the motorcycle industry is in the blood, it stays in the blood! The Twin Power program earned a reputation for providing quality performance parts at a fair price. The line is now headed up by another former S&S Cycle (and Baker Drivetrain) man, James Simonelli, as the very knowledgeable and very shrewd brand manager for Twin Power at Tucker Rocky/Biker's Choice. The new iteration of the brand features parts that are designed for bikes ranging from yesterday’s old school to tomorrow’s classic motorcycles. "From pistons for Ironhead Sportsters to high-tech lithiumion batteries, we have more performance parts for more applications than ever, tested in independent labs to ensure that they fit and work like they should," says James. www.tuckerrocky.com

30th annual Biker Fest International

Italian custom bike rally Biker Fest will celebrate its 30th anniversary this year when Italian riders and custom bike enthusiasts descend in their thousands on the popular resort town of Lignano Sabbiadoro, east of Venice on Italy's East coast, from 19th to 22nd of May. The event is the culmination of the Italian Motorcycle Championship, a series of national custom bike show events, and is again an affiliate of the AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building - the top three will receive an expenses prize of 1,000 Euro to compete at this year's AMD World Championship at INTERMOT, Cologne, Germany in October. Staged at the resort's iconic Terazza a Mare overlooking the Adriatic, more than 100 of Italy's finest custom creations will compete for a range of sponsor prizes, including a trip to Daytona.

The event is sponsored by Metzeler and has the backing of several major OEs in Italy, including Harley-Davidson, Ducati, Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, BMW, Moto Guzzi, Indian, Victory and Aprilia. Organized by leading Italian custom magazine Biker's Life publisher Moreno Persello, Biker Fest is always one of the first of Europe's rallies and as a season opener based on an area that boasts a wide range of readily available accommodation (from camping and self-catering apartments to hotels to suit all budgets). The event has everything the discerning rally-goer could wish for - great weather, great scenery, great entertainment, great company, great food (of course!) and great custom bikes! www.bikerfest.com

Exhibitors givE 2016

v-twin Expo a "thumbs up" As tear-down was underway at the downtown Cincinnati, Ohio exhibition center on Sunday the almost universal sentiment among the show's loyal exhibitor community was that they'd had a good weekend. After a long time suffering the effects of the downturn that started to savage the motorcycle industry in 2008, the spike seen in attendee engagement with exhibitors last year has proven to be a robust foundation. Still the only expo of its kind, V-Twin Expo has reconfirmed its status as the market's primary business showcase with all the exhibitors that AMD Magazine spoke with pleased with the Saturday attendance saying that of itself the crowds of qualified buyers in the aisles justified their investments. For the first time in a couple of years and the last time in a few more the show clashed with the NFL Superbowl and while that didn't appear to have deterred dealers on the Saturday of the expo, the Sunday crowd was thin. The primary industry concerns expressed by exhibitors over the weekend for once had nothing to do with the market's competing shows and events. It was Harley-Davidson's performance and continuing alarm at the

consolidation and vendor instability in the market that exercised minds. In the case of Harley-Davidson rumors circulated about a new liquid-cooled engine that would appear to be finally ready for debut later this year. However, reports concerning its likely deployment primarily appeared to focus on it being a new Touring platform replacement for the existing line of Twin Cam engines, not as the basis of a much needed new platform that could add new rider demographics to the 'Bar 'n' Shield' balance sheet. Aftermarket concern about Harley-Davidson's present corporate malaise and aging product offer was palpable. In strategic terms the market is painfully aware of the challenges that the conventional parts and accessory product channels are facing, with pressure from market consolidation and increasing by-passing of brick-and-mortar outlets compromising dealer profits, reducing vendor turnovers and forcing smaller vendors still further to the margins. Always the life blood of the custom parts and accessory industry, and a rich vein of returnees for V-Twin Expo, the more difficult life gets for the specialists the poorer the market becomes for our customers.

Solar converters make off-grid battery charging practical The issue of using the obvious benefits of solar energy to charge motorcycle batteries is one that has advantage and opportunity, but also frustration and difficulty in equal measure. Solar chargers are a great concept, but even in good sunlight they deliver low power, slowly. Not knowing how the charging is going and the status of the battery at any given time in the process, is one of the biggest issues when using a solar panel to charge. However, TecMate say that their OptiMate

Solar controllers provide that information at a glance – battery status, and even if there is sufficient sun to charge the battery. The OptiMate Solar controller is light and small enough to be located at the battery, hanging directly off the fitted battery lead, instantly allowing you access to full information at a glance - such as if there is sufficient sunlight (and therefore solar power) to charge the battery at all, and if there is sufficient power for a charge, is it charging or maintaining the battery? Best of all, it will tell you if and when the battery is ready to deliver. Unhappy owners of standard 12V solar panels can add an OptiMate Solar charger kit and instantly improve their ability to work with the solar charging process. There is a choice of two options - the TecMate TM520 Solar charger kit works on 12V batteries, and the TM521 Solar charger kit will convert a standard 12V solar panel into a 6V battery charger. Both kits are delivered with high quality cable accessories, including the O-1 weatherproof battery lead and O-4 OptiMate battery clips that connect directly to the OptiMate charge controller, as well as a polarity converter for other brands of solar panel.

If you don't have a solar panel, but would like to use solar power if the experience can be made userfriendly and reliable, then the TM-524 OptiMate Solar charge kit includes a high quality 6W solar panel that comes with 3m/10ft output lead that ends in the OptiMate charge controller. An SAE in-line connection allows the cable to be extended in case you plan to mount the panel further away. TECMATE Tienen, BELGIUM Tel: +32 (0)16 805440 www.tecmate.com

HSR48 - new extended main jet and larger fuel valve The Mikuni HSR48 Flat Slide Racing Smoothbore carburetor for Big Twins is described by the company as "the must-have for any highly tuned, increased displacement Big Twin motorcycle engine." Mikuni claims it offers the highest airflow possible while providing highly accurate fuel metering, more power and "Mikuni’s renowned precision throttle response. A new extended main jet and larger fuel valve assure ample fuel supply for very powerful and larger displacement engines." Mikuni say their HSR48 offers all the same features and big performance gains as their popular HSR42 and HSR45 carburetors for stock and mildly modified Harley-Davidson and other V-twins. All their HSR carburetors are designed with an 8-roller bearing flat throttle slide assembly that allows an unobstructed venturi at full throttle to flow more air, while it mixes fuel more precisely at all throttle settings.

Mikuni’s roller bearing throttle slide is designed to offer smoother throttle control and allows the use of a lighter throttle return spring for reduced throttle effort. The adjustable accelerator pump provides "instant throttle response in any riding or performance application, while a high capacity float bowl prevents fuel starvation even under full throttle applications." Ships complete with rubber mounting flange, choke cable, remote idle adjuster and additional jetting. MIKUNI AMERICAN CORP Northridge, California, USA Tel: 818 885 1242 www.mikunipower.com

'Game Changer' 32-tooth sprocket nteresting news from Rivera Primo of a sprocket that works with the OE compensator assembly and fixes the gear ratio as an alternative to eliminating it with a solid sprocket. The stock sprocket has 34 teeth with a 46-tooth clutch basket sprocket. This gear combination gives relatively poor torque, and to date the solutions have mostly been to replace the stock assembly with a solid sprocket. However, Rivera Primo's new

'Game Changer' sprocket has 32 teeth which, coupled with the stock basket, hugely improves the torque. The kit includes an innovative "clip-on" adjuster shoe that clips onto the OE adjuster shoe to take up the extra primary chain slack created by the smaller sprocket. 'Game Changer' gear ratio kits are completely bolt-on and work on 2007 and later H-D Touring and Trike models when used with the 2011 and later Screamin' Eagle compensator assembly. Low weight Dyna swingarm Lexington, North Carolina based C&S Custom has added high-performance, lightweight aerospacequality aluminum swingarms for late-model Dynas to its ever growing range of custom parts and accessories for v-twins. The company claims a weight reduction of 20lbs of unsprung weight compared to the stock swingarm, increasing performance and handling especially "off idle and in maneuvring," the company says. "We already provide swingarms in thousands of

powder-coat colors, in chrome, or in contrast-cut with grooved louvers to match popular aftermarket rims, pulleys and rotors," explained Steve Garwood, General Manager. Utilizing "proven technology to deliver a custom look at affordable prices," the swingarm is machined inhouse, "using only military aircraft-quality 6061-T6 aluminum. It's specified by C&S because of its tensile strength, fatigue limit and resistance to corrosion even when the surface is abraded. "It is generally recognized that road handling

characteristics are enhanced by reducing a machine's unsprung weight. All things being equal, a lighter motorcycle will accelerate faster, stop faster, and be easier to turn when changing direction, so when looking for performance, lighter is better." Dealers can select stock lengths up to 10" over stock. C&S Custom supplies both single units and full kits, which include fasteners, caliper, wheel and chain, depending on what is required. The units are designed for Dynas from 2006 to present. Established in 1999, C & S Custom has become best known as one of America's leading sportsbike performance engineers and customizers with billet accessories and wide tire kits to one-off custom built motorcycles. As anyone who has seen any of the company's custom bikes in the flesh will attest, it has a deserved reputation for quality and leading edge design. The company also has a large range of custom and performance options for Big Twins and V-Rods, including 300, 330 and 360 series wide tire kits, wide triple trees for 240, 300, 330 and 360 front wheels, and raked custom triple trees for 21 and 23" front wheels. 2016-style Softail turn signal connector extensions We were speaking with electrics guru Jeff Zielinski (of Namz Products/Badlands fame) at the V-Twin Expo, and he was talking about the number of times he gets calls from dealers and customizers who have fallen foul of Harley's habit (and it applies to other OEs too) of making theoretically small changes that have significant knockon effects. "It seems that every year the factory sneaks in some changes to a particular model, and 2016 was no exception," Jeff said. But luckily you don’t need to worry about finding out the hard way, as the NAMZ crew has you covered. "On the 2016 Softail the factory changed the connectors used on the front turn signals and to move them, you’ll need our

100 percent Plug-n-Play extensions - they are simple to install, have color matching wire, connectors and are guaranteed to fit," according to Jeff. FP3 for J1850 touring models Last year saw Vance & Hines make continuous refinements to its FP3 FuelPak, adding features and updating ease of use. The addition of four new options to the Sensor Data were announced in March: Instantaneous Fuel Economy - to read the current fuel economy in real time; Average Fuel Economy with cycle reset button - to keep track of fuel usage over time and calculate the overall fuel economy; Power and Torque. The version 1.4.0. announced in July included Cam Shaft Support (incorporating more than 50 different aftermarket cams in the View/Edit maps area); DTC information providing specific descriptions of trouble codes to better help diagnose the potential cause(s); AutoTune Force Quit and customer support features as well as Manual Firmware Update accessibility. In September Vance & Hines added Speedometer

Calibration, allowing users to precisely calibrate the speedometer for stock bikes or aftermarket wheels and tire sizes utilizing smartphone GPS, and choice of 3 different decel-pop reduction levels that can be flashed into the bike. This was followed by improved (more intuitive) manual cam data entry and 2016 model support. The latest news concerns bikes prior to 2014. The current FP3 is designed for the Delphi equipped models from 2014 – 2016, but now the company is releasing a 2007 - 2013 version for big twin models with the J1850 data bus. This opens up the FuelPak options that dealers and tuners have to include Pre-Rushmore and out-of-warranty tourers - a big new business opportunity for Vance & Hines and their dealers.

James primary gaskets Seen here for 2004 and up Sportsters, James Gaskets offer the most comprehensive range of complete primary gasket and seal kits on the market. Precision manufactured in stiff chemical and heat tolerant aluminum, the cross-linked Foamet Nitrile synthetic rubber is chemically blown to create a soft, conformable layer that is permanently bonded to the SAE 5052 H38 aluminum core. The Foamet compresses, providing excellent torque retention sealability, with no additional sealants required. Founded in 1979, and still under family ownership at its 46,000 sq ft, Dayton, Nevada facility, James Gaskets has always been well known for its investment in materials research and use of the best available metals and sealant techniques for the applications concerned. In the case of James Gaskets' Nitrile Foamet technology (or Nitrile Butadiene Rubber - NBR - to give its full technical name), it delivers good overall resistance to oils and

the chemical 'packages' usually included in modern day oil formulas. It also delivers excellent heat resistance with the added advantage of superior conformance to the sealing surfaces found in OE and aftermarket v-twin primaries and improved tolerance of the lower clamping loads used in v-twins. James offer gaskets, seals and kits for most applications on all Harley-Davidson models from 1936 to present - its popular gasket boards are widely regarded as a workshop credential, a hallmark of service excellence.

More new parts and accessory designs released by Hudson, Wisconsin based Ciro include these new further air cleaner designs. The patent-pending 'Cipher' air cleaner design is said to have a "unique, exotic and clean style that beautifully accents any engine." The air cleaner assembly is an inch thinner than the factory set up, which makes riding (especially touring) a more comfortable experience. The reusable cotton filter breathes from the top and sides, increasing airflow by 50 percent, and features a radius inlet. Available in chrome/silver, black/carbon, chrome/black and black/chrome, they ship as a kit with "everything needed for a quick and easy bolton installation." Also seen here, Ciro's "Shock & Awe" L.E.D. lighting kit will allow customizing with "an unbelievable light show." Available in a Bluetooth 4.0 version controlled by Android or Apple devices, offering "millions of light options", or the standard rotary dial controlled version with 21 available colors, three brightness levels and a flash mode. The Bluetooth controlled version is said to offer infinite colors, precise brightness control, advance color, brightness and timing sequence programming, a save function to store programs and the option to create two zones of look for the bike. The kit includes 2 x 12" L.E.D. strips, 6 x 3" strips, yadaptors, wiring extensions and rotary controller. CIRO Hudson, Wisconsin, USA Tel: 715 808 0027 info@ciro3d.com www.ciro3d.com

Victory 'Octane'

BRIEFS

Robin Bradley takes a strategic look at what the new Victory 'Octane' could mean for the aftermarket and for Milwaukee

In the United States the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) may be about to start enforcing emissions regulations on street-legal production bikes that have been modified for track and race use.

The new Victory Octane is a platform about which so more can be said, strategically and technically. The aftermarket as we know it can no longer depend solely on Harley's XLs and Big Twins. With peak-bagger having been passed and uncertainty surrounding the future strength of demand for Harley's core offerings, the advent of the "New Indians" have already represented a much needed shot-in-the-arm for aftermarket prospects - as well as an unwelcome, though surely predictable, shotacross-the-bows for Milwaukee. With the Octane, Polaris has done it again - but on steroids. From an aftermarket perspective the platform is a gift that will just keep giving. While it would be impossible to speculate at this stage about just how high the production numbers will climb (they don't need to be huge for the bike to be nonetheless hugely significant), the one thing that we can be sure of is that at the kind of retail price point it has been introduced, the scope for aftermarket opportunity will

American Carl Reese has set a new solo "Cannonball" crosscountry record riding the 2,829 miles from Las Vegas to New York City in just 38 hours, 49 minutes - on a BMW K 1600 GT beating a record that had stood since 1983 by over three hours. Milwaukee now has another motorcycle manufacturer. Headed by ex Harley man Rod Copes, Royal Enfield North America, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Indian parent company, has taken over North American responsibility for the brand from Fairbault, Minnesota based Classic Motor Works. Copes is quoted as targeting 100 dealer appointments in 2016. The Indian Scout powered Indian Motorcycle to a doubling of unit sales in Australia in 2015. Polaris now has 8 Indian dealerships there, three of which it directly owns and operates. The latest Consumer Product Safety Commission Report shows that fatalities and injuries related to All Terrain Vehicle use in the United States continued to decline in 2014 for the seventh straight year since they peaked in 2007.

be immense. What is more, we are not talking (only) bolt-on here. The Scouts and the Chiefs are all begging to be dressed and revisualised, but the Octane is begging to be engineered and retuned. For a start, it is a raging certainty that it won't be long before that front end gets beefed up (48mm upside downies?) and the rear suspension gets piggy-backs. It is crying out for lightweight wheels, sports brakes, replacement pipes, titanium valvetrain, fuel-injection tuning, new bars, instruments and controls - to say nothing of an improved seat (something from the Le Pera studio perhaps?). Victory's launch info already details a stage one replacement exhaust, piggy back shocks, drag bars and a tach with shift light, so they are clearly aware of the machine's destiny at the hands of

the market's tuners, and I can't wait to see what the likes of Brock's Performance, 'T-Man' Riser, Dan Fitzmaurice, Hoban Brothers, Scott Sjovall and so many others are able to make of it. Victory in particular, and Polaris in general, have a much more enlightened attitude to seeing the aftermarket as a potential partner rather than as their enemy. They have an established modus operandi that has not only seen them buying third party candidates for the PG&A programs, but also sees them working with aftermarket vendors on an independent basis. They understand that doing so, making it worthwhile for other vendors to market their Continued on page 10 >>>
